What is PPP? A definition by Wikipedia;

"In networking, the Point-to-Point Protocol, or PPP, is a data link protocol commonly used to establish a direct connection between twonetworking nodes. It can provide connection authentication and can also provide transmission encryption privacy and compression.

PPP is used over many types of physical networks including serial cablephone linetrunk linecellular telephone, specialized radio links, or fiber optic links such as SONET. Most Internet service providers (ISPs) use PPP for customer dial-up access to the Internet. Two encapsulated forms of PPP, Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet (PPPoE) and Point-to-Point Protocol over ATM (PPPoA), are used by Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to connect Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) Internet service.

PPP is commonly used to act as a data link layer protocol for connection over synchronous and asynchronous circuits, where it has largely superseded the older, non-standard Serial Line Internet Protocol (SLIP), and telephone company mandated standards (such as Link Access Protocol, Balanced (LAPB) in the X.25 protocol suite). PPP was designed to work with numerous network layer protocols, including Internet Protocol (IP), Novell's Internetwork Packet Exchange (IPX), NBF and AppleTalk."

2. Webpage server is down/insufficient bandwidth or congested

Solutions:
1. open command prompt and do PING to the website
e.g: ping google.com (enter) : If the PING reply is OK meaning that the connection to the web server is OK. If the data packet reply is incomplete (usually command prompt will send 4 sets of data packets, connections is OK if the PING reply displayed exactly 4 sets. However if there is a degradation of the packets received, that means the internet connection got a problem)

The mobile cellular telecommunication company's revenue surged by 10.1 per cent to RM5.606 billion from RM5.093 billion previously.

Chief executive officer, Datuk Seri Shazalli Ramly said the year 2008 saw the best ever financial results in the company's history as a result of its turnaround plan and an aggressive marketing strategy.

"We are also the only mobile operator that recorded 11 consecutive quarters of revenue growth," he said during a media briefing on the company's performance, here today.

He said the slowdown in the economy has not had any major impact on the company's business.

"Hence, we are still experiencing growth in subscriber base and usage, all of which are positive indications to drive our revenue base," he added.

Celcom's earnings before tax, interest, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) was up 10.5 per cent to RM2.5 billion in 2008 from RM2.3 billion in the year before, contributing to the improvement of its EBITDA margin to 45.2 per cent from 44.6 per cent.

Seems that Celcom once again on a right path to regain its status as the number #1 cellular provider in Malaysia. Currently Celcom are the leader in Mobile Broadband segment due to its extensive UMTS/WCDMA and HSDPA coverage. To maintain this status, Celcom must upgrade thier ISP backbone systems in order to accomodate the ever increasing number of subscribers.

FACTS ABOUT CELCOM MOBILE BROADBAND

2

1. Previously Celcom offers two types of internet connections which are based on Circuit Switch (CS) data and the recent one is based on Packet Switch (PS) data. Since last year, the CS connection was abandon and there is no more available support for the system. The current PS connection applied through 4 different networks i.e: GPRS, EDGE, UMTS/WCDMA and HSDPA.

2. The speed of your internet connection is based on location, what type of signal available and the device/modem you are using.

3. Basicly, there are 5 types of Celcom Mobile Broadband offerings:
a. D68 coupled with voice plan (CEP or minutes plan) -up to 384Kbps
b. D98 coupled with voice plan (CEP or minutes plan) -up to 3.6Mbps
c. Stand Alone D68 -up to 384Kbps
d. Stand Alone D98 -up to 3.6Mbps
e. Daily Unlimited RM6 per day -up to 3.6Mbps

4. Celcom offer widest UMTS/WCDMA and HSDPA coverage in the country.

5. Dont expect to get full 384Kbps or 3.6Mbps. It`s almost impossible. That is the maximum speed of the system under maximum conditions. Usually you will get around 200Kbps-300Kbps for D68 package and around 800Kbps-3Mbps for D98 package. Determine what type of signal is available in your area before deciding to subscribe.

6.Your internet speed will be reduced if there are a lot of Celcom subscriber attached to a certain cell tower. If there is a lot of voice call transmitted to the tower which your connection is hooked, it will also decrease your connection speed due to the tower will prioritize voice call over data transmission.

7.Celcom impose 5GB limitation as a fair usage policy for each subcriber. Once your download exceed 5GB, for D68 subscriber, your speed will be throttled from 384Kbps to 64Kbps. For D98 subscriber, your speed will be throttled from 3.6Mbps to 128Kbps. Your connection speed once throttled will be reseted on your next billing cycle.

8. The connection using mobile networks is much inferior compared to fixed line networks in term of stability and speed. So dont expect you Mobile broadband to replace your Streamyx connection. Mobile Broadband intended for those who are always want easy internet connections while on the move. For heavy downloads and online games, stick to fixed line broadband.

9. Celcom use dynamic IP shared by all subscribers. Dynamic IP is considered as unsecured connections, thus it may restrict you from accessing certain websites which require personal IP such as rapidshare and MIRC. However there is no problem if you want to use Celcom Broadband to access Internet Banking website and perform online transactions.

10. You can share your Celcom broadband internet connections with other computers using dedicated routers.
