HOW CAN WE SPEED UP WIRELESS BROADBAND CONNECTION (PART 1)

2
The question that need to be answered here is that can we increase the speed of our Celcom Mobile Broadband? The answer is quite relative. In some ways, yes we can speed up the internet connection (be it download or upload). But in some other aspect, the answer is a BIG NO!!!

For better understanding, we must have a bird view on how the Internet user communicate with each other. During my early tertiary education level, I still remember my lecturer explained that there are several parties which form the communication convergence:

a) End user and the system which process the digital data into readable and understandable data. (In this case it is reffering to the individual and his computer set)

b) ISP provider or the Internet provider.

c) The internet itself

Of the three separate parties, you can only took control of the item a and item c above. For the Item b, you dont have the power to control it since it falls solely under jurisdiction of your internet service provider and you dont have privilidges to manipulate it.

A)End user and the computer system
  1. Better computer and machine specifications actually will speed up your internet access. Computer with big RAM ammounts and faster processing powers will process all the incoming data seamlessly without any lag. For example, loading a data intensive page such as youtube.com will be faster on the machines which is powered by an Intel Dual Core processor with a multi Gigabytes of RAM compared to machines which was powered by older Pentium 3 processor with a mere 64MB or 128MB of RAM.
  2. Upgrading your Operating system (OS) will also in theory will speed up your internet connections due to newer OS will take advantage of the power of the processor. Windows XP handles internet connection better compared to Windows 98.
  3. Apart from the computer specification and software, better modem specification also will give positive result for your internet speed. For example Huawei E160G USB Modem is better than let say the old Huawei E660 datacard.
  4. Using specific software for specific activity will no doubt will increase your internet speed. For example using a speciallized downloader software to download data or application from the internet will be the best options compared to the built in downloader function for Internet browser.

B) The Internet Service Provider
  1. I will not discuss further about internet service provider since subscriber are unable to control the flow or the process anything which are related to this matter.
c) The Internet or the Network which you are connected to.
  1. Under this category, there are several things that actually the subscriber can control.
  2. The Internet were born from several networks connected to each other to form the world wide web. Since there are millions of servers and computers connected, a system called DNS (Domain Name System) is used so that the computers and servers worldwide can inter-communicate among itself.
  3. DNS system regulates the address and route connection between the internet networks. Since DNS system was grouped into a tree-like hierarchy (there is a root, branches and other small group of DNS provider). Reliable DNS sytem can increase your data transfer rate to some extent.

DO CELCOM BROADBAND SUPPORT IPv6 INTERNET LAYER PROTOCOL?

3
Recently a Celcom careline representative consulted me on a matter with regards to whether Celcom Mobile Broadband support the next generation of internet protocol IPv6.

The answer (eventhough may not be publicly announced by Celcom (M) Bhd) is affirmative. For the time being Celcom Internet network are based on the current standard which is the IPv4. Last year Ericsson was contracted by Celcom to provide a new networking flatform based on the All-IP architecture by deploying Ericsson`s Mobile Softswitch system. Reader can refer to this article for the full story {http://www.lightreading.com/document.asp?doc_id=149524&site=ctia}

As a result of the implementation of an All-IP core networking system, automatically it will also support IPv6 protocol per say. In laymen term for simple understanding, compared to IPv4, IPv6 have the upper hand over IPv4. I will only highlight 2 (actually there are several but for me these 2 are the most important), namely:

a. Support larger allocation for DNS system (IPv4 use a 32bits address and IPv6 use 128bits of address) and ability to accomodate the ever increasing internet traffic
b.More secure connections

Example: a diagram of ALL-IP core networks by Motorola inc

IPv6 addresses range from 0000:0000:0000:0000:0000:0000:0000:0000 to ffff:ffff:ffff:ffff:ffff:ffff:ffff:ffff(e.g: 2001:0db8:85a3:0000:0000:8a2e:0370:7334). For IPv4 the range is from 000.000.000.000 to 255.255.255.255 (e.g: 10.128.1.242)
