CELCOM DNS BENCHMARK!!

1

Dear All,

Guys, I just did a benchmark on Celcom DNS primary server which is 203.82.64.41 using the google DNS benchmarking tools.

what I did was:
1. Get the primary DNS server for celcom under the ipconfig /all command. (see the attachment)
2. I used the alexa database (the list of most visited website in the world) as a measurement tools
3. Use other regional DNS server as a comparison to Celcom`s DNS.

What is the purpose of the test?
1. To test which DNS server is better for daily use.
2. To prove that better supported DNS server will increase your internet speed.
3. Comparing Celcom DNS server to other regional DNS server in performance and reliability.

Conclusion:
1. Better supported DNS server yield significant better internet speed.
2. Celcom DNS is better than digi`s DNS server.

          LIMITED CONNECTIVITY ERROR

          1
A few months back, I received an email from one of the visitor of this blog asking me about this problem, "limited connectivity". The good news is that this error happen rarely if you own a Windows XP based machine. The bad news is, the probability of having to face this error on a machine with Vista OS is greater. Limited connectivity error is a result of the mulfunctioning DHCP system.

          Diagnosis:
Celcom Broadband utilized Public Dynamic IP, meaning that there is a big chance that you might be sharing an IP with someone else. Celcom provide a "pool of IPs" and each time your computer connect to the internet, you will never know which IP you will be assigned untill you are connected to the internet network. The system which control this is called the DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol).

          Scenario:
Everytime you start a PDP session a.k.a. creating a connection to the internet network, (in this case, since you do not have a specific IP) your computer will send a request to the Celcom Server asking for an IP. Due to network error, the server did not respond to your computer request. After several request went unanswered, your computer will create a dummy IP (usually starting from 169.***.***.***). What happen is that the data session bridging is success but no reply from the ISP server. Just imagine a car moving from point A to point B. The highway connecting A and B is available but the car is out of petrol.

          Solutions:
          1. Connection is there but without a valid IP address. Thats why it shows erorr "limited connectivity".
          2. Without valid IP your connection to the internet network is meaningless because other computers and servers on the network will not recognize or communicate with your computer and vice versa.
3.Rebooting your computer usually solved this problem.
          4. Or, try to change your network band (e.g. from 3G only to GPRS only etc.)
5.If you are on Vista OS, upgrading your drivers/firmware is the best bet if you frequently bugged by this problem. There is an unconfirmed report (but highly possible) about the problem with Vista`s TCP/IP with some old modems and routers.

          CELCOM MOBILE BROADBAND RATING

          2
          Dear all;

Recently I did a test to rate the quality of a Celcom mobile broadband internet connection. It is an independent benchmarking available at pingtest.net.

The line quality was measured by determining PING time, jitters and packet loss percentage. However bear in mind that this is a general assessment of the Celcom Broadband quality and it is not final. The result may be different if different server location were selected. So to say that the line is bad, in my opinion is a bit premature. However to say that the line is excellent is way of the mark.

Since Celcom Mobile Broadband connection was transmitted using a cellular transmission, we cannot expect it to be performing on par with the wired/fixed broadband connection. Wireless transmission to some extent, will suffer data loss and signal inconsistency. So if you want a more stable and consistent connection, choose a fixed line broadband. Remember broadband connection over GSM signal is not intended to be a direct replacement for your wired/fixed line broadband. It only act as secondary connection or additional connection whenever you are on the go.

Have you ever heard of those fella who are running their internet based business which most of the time require a stable constant internet connection, and to my surprise some of them use a celullar based broadband (celcom) as a main internet connection, you know how I feel pitty for them. One more thing, I don't know why Celcom advertise their connection as a medium for online gaming. The PING result is quite high and it is not suitable at all for online gaming.

Overall, a D for Celcom mobile broadband.. to say the result is suck, wait until you see the result of the other mobile broadband provider in this country. A complete laughing stock of the millennium!!

          ERROR 680: NO DIAL TONE

          0
For Celcom Mobile Broadband subscriber, sometimes you may face this kind of error.

          Root Problem:
          1. Network congestion - computer failed to do successful dial up operation due to the unavailability or failure to transmit data packets.
          2. Hardware problem - Modem not connected properly or the USB contact point damaged (for USB modem).
          3. For For Broadband package subscribed together with a voice plan, in some remote cases voice mail system may interrupt with the computer dialing system.

          Solutions:
For network error, just contact your service provider. If the error is not caused by network congestion, you can try to do these steps:

Go to control Panel>>Phone and Modem Options>>Modem>>(highlight your modem)>>properties>Modem tab and unchecked wait for dial tone before dialing.

In some remote cases, receiving voice mail while the computer is attempting to execute dial up networking may confuse your computer into thinking that there is no valid dial tone (this is because some voice mail system keep sending a beeping signal which will wrongly interpreted by the computer). Depending on the carrier you subscribed, try to check that your computer setting is set to the correct local country so that your computer is listening to the correct dialing tone.

Start>Control Panel>Printers and Other Hardware>Phone and Modem Options>Dialing Rules>Edit>General tab>make sure that the correct country is listed under Country/region.

          VLBDC error anybody?!!

          5
This morning I received an email with an error which I never heard/know before. Anybody out there who were "special" enough to face this problem? Frankly speaking, since I subscribed to Celcom Mobile Broadband, I didn't encounter any problem with their service (except in a few occasions where the error 619 demon 'surface' and caused my connection to transform from BROADBAND service to SUPER SNAIL BAND).

          Scenario:
A subscriber try to do connections to the internet, and.....the browser will automatically directed to this webpage www.vlbdc.com. Thinking that his homepage maybe accidentally changed, he tried to open another website. To this subscriber horror, it seems that he cannot even open another page because every time the subscriber typed a web address and hit enter, automatically it will be directed back to this haunted www.vlbdc.com

          Solutions:
Since I never face this problem before, I don't have any concrete answer to this problem.. Generally, if the subscriber are able to open the vlbdc.com site, that means the internet connection is OK. The most probable answer is that the subscriber computer was invaded by a virus/malware. I did try to open the website myself. Here is the screenshot:
A quick WHOIS of this website:
This website is registered under a company located at Shanghai China (75.125.118.191). So, if its so happen that your computer was invaded by viruses/malware, then you know exactly what you need to do. Update your Antivirus and make sure your firewall is activated. Don`t forget to delete all your browsers old temporary internet files and cookies. Go to my computer, right click on drive C and go to disk clean up. Clear everything. Then repeat the same procedure to your other drive. Reinstall or better upgrade your dialing software and modem driver to the latest version. If still failed, try to do System restore. If everything has been done but you still get the same error, then maybe its time for you to reformat your computer.

P/s: If you happen to be the victim of this vlbdc.com error, please give me the full detail so that we can find the best solution for it.TQ

          MOBILE CONNECTION IS NOT POSSIBLE

          17
Its almost 2 months since the last time I updated this blog [ I took a long leave :) ].

Last weekend I have a training/meeting with ZTE personnel. For those who does not know yet, ZTE currently is the main modem distributor for Celcom Mobile Broadband. They supply ZTE K3565-Z (Same spec with Huawei or Vodafone K3565). Same product, but from two different distributors. Both modem are using Vodafone Mobile Connect Lite as a dialling software and both a made in China products ;)..

(You think that this is a Vodafone product??!! Naahh..its ZTE or HuaWei. pls dont be fooled by the logo hehe )

Based on the training given, it seems that among the most common problem faced by those who are using this modem on a Celcom Mobile Broadband network is they frequently face this error "Mobile connection is not possible". Due to my laziness, I just copy and paste it here for us to share the available solutions:

Ladies and gentlemen, familiar with this error? If your answer is a definite yess, then proceed with your reading..

          Reasons
Known reasons are 2 at present, and all the possibilities below due to the Windows OS problems or the compatibility.
          1. As the pop-up window shown, other programs really occupied the device.
          2. Network problems.
          3. Devices Driver problems.

          Way to fix
For 1, reboot the computer and try again. If no effect, uninstall VMC and install it again.
For 2, wait for a moment and try to connect again. If no effect, move to another place and try again.
For 3, right click “My Computer” and select “manage” – “Device Manager”, then check all the ZTE devices. Please ensure all the red selected ZTE devices works fine.
Please make sure all the ports and comm related to your modem is configured correctly

If not, install the device driver manually.

If you cannot install the driver manually, right click the device and select uninstall then scan the new device. The driver then can be installed properly.

The default path for the drivers of K3565-Z below (assuming that you installed your software in drive C):

          C:\Program Files\Vodafone\Vodafone Mobile Connect\Driver\pccard\xp\ZTE3520

HOW CAN WE SPEED UP WIRELESS BROADBAND CONNECTION (PART 1)

          2
The question that need to be answered here is that can we increase the speed of our Celcom Mobile Broadband? The answer is quite relative. In some ways, yes we can speed up the internet connection (be it download or upload). But in some other aspect, the answer is a BIG NO!!!

For better understanding, we must have a bird view on how the Internet user communicate with each other. During my early tertiary education level, I still remember my lecturer explained that there are several parties which form the communication convergence:

          a) End user and the system which process the digital data into readable and understandable data. (In this case it is reffering to the individual and his computer set)

          b) ISP provider or the Internet provider.

          c) The internet itself

Of the three separate parties, you can only took control of the item a and item c above. For the Item b, you dont have the power to control it since it falls solely under jurisdiction of your internet service provider and you dont have privilidges to manipulate it.

A)End user and the computer system
          1. Better computer and machine specifications actually will speed up your internet access. Computer with big RAM ammounts and faster processing powers will process all the incoming data seamlessly without any lag. For example, loading a data intensive page such as youtube.com will be faster on the machines which is powered by an Intel Dual Core processor with a multi Gigabytes of RAM compared to machines which was powered by older Pentium 3 processor with a mere 64MB or 128MB of RAM.
          2. Upgrading your Operating system (OS) will also in theory will speed up your internet connections due to newer OS will take advantage of the power of the processor. Windows XP handles internet connection better compared to Windows 98.
          3. Apart from the computer specification and software, better modem specification also will give positive result for your internet speed. For example Huawei E160G USB Modem is better than let say the old Huawei E660 datacard.
          4. Using specific software for specific activity will no doubt will increase your internet speed. For example using a speciallized downloader software to download data or application from the internet will be the best options compared to the built in downloader function for Internet browser.

          B) The Internet Service Provider
          1. I will not discuss further about internet service provider since subscriber are unable to control the flow or the process anything which are related to this matter.
          c) The Internet or the Network which you are connected to.
          1. Under this category, there are several things that actually the subscriber can control.
          2. The Internet were born from several networks connected to each other to form the world wide web. Since there are millions of servers and computers connected, a system called DNS (Domain Name System) is used so that the computers and servers worldwide can inter-communicate among itself.
          3. DNS system regulates the address and route connection between the internet networks. Since DNS system was grouped into a tree-like hierarchy (there is a root, branches and other small group of DNS provider). Reliable DNS sytem can increase your data transfer rate to some extent.
          To be continued...

DO CELCOM BROADBAND SUPPORT IPv6 INTERNET LAYER PROTOCOL?

          3
Recently a Celcom careline representative consulted me on a matter with regards to whether Celcom Mobile Broadband support the next generation of internet protocol IPv6.

          The answer (eventhough may not be publicly announced by Celcom (M) Bhd) is affirmative. For the time being Celcom Internet network are based on the current standard which is the IPv4. Last year Ericsson was contracted by Celcom to provide a new networking flatform based on the All-IP architecture by deploying Ericsson`s Mobile Softswitch system. Reader can refer to this article for the full story {http://www.lightreading.com/document.asp?doc_id=149524&site=ctia}

As a result of the implementation of an All-IP core networking system, automatically it will also support IPv6 protocol per say. In laymen term for simple understanding, compared to IPv4, IPv6 have the upper hand over IPv4. I will only highlight 2 (actually there are several but for me these 2 are the most important), namely:

          a. Support larger allocation for DNS system (IPv4 use a 32bits address and IPv6 use 128bits of address) and ability to accomodate the ever increasing internet traffic
          b.More secure connections

Example: a diagram of ALL-IP core networks by Motorola inc

          IPv6 addresses range from 0000:0000:0000:0000:0000:0000:0000:0000 to ffff:ffff:ffff:ffff:ffff:ffff:ffff:ffff(e.g: 2001:0db8:85a3:0000:0000:8a2e:0370:7334). For IPv4 the range is from 000.000.000.000 to 255.255.255.255 (e.g: 10.128.1.242)

POP3 AND IMAP EMAIL SENDING FAILED

          1
          Scenario:
A Celcom Mobile Broadband subscriber unable to send POP3 and IMAP E-Mail. However if connected to other ISP provider such as Streamyx or Jaring, the problem is not exist. In this case usually the subscriber are able to surf the internet and able to recieve Email. The only problem is when trying to send email using POP3 or IMAP protocol email.

          Root Problem:
The IP which you are hooked to were blocked by your email provider server or even the intended or recepient email server. Why did the subscribers IP was blocked? There are several reasons but nowadays the most probable answer is that the IP was tagged due to spams (suspected spammers).

This is the downside of using dynamic IP where the IP were shared by multiple subscribers, and once one of the subscriber "missuse" or abuse the connection to send spams, then the IP will be blocked or tagged as spammers.

          So how to solve it:
          1. get your external IP address (you can get your from this e.g. website www.whatismyip.com or other online IP tools).

2.Once you get your IP, contact your email provider (if your email is your own company email, refer to your respective IT department) and verify this matter. If its confirmed that the specific IP was blocked or tagged as spammers, ask them to remove it.

          3. If you are too lazy to contact your IT department, try to google "free IP". I bet you will find a lot of free IPs out there. Try several IP untill you found an unblocked one and are working fine for your connection. To change your IP, for internet explorer user go to Option>Tools>Internet Option>Connection> LAN setting. Here you can enter your desired IP. Try restarting your computer before attempting a new Internet session.

4.Sometimes if your email server request for DNS, I highly recommend these DNS address from openDNS (208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220). Eventhough Celcom do provide DNS server but the reliability is doubted. Previously the DNS used was of TM origin.

5.A few years back celcom IP 219.93.152.18 (during this time celcom were using TMNet backbone system) were listed by http://www.spamhaus.org and http://cbl.abuseat.org as spammer. Therefore a lot of email defender system automatically block incoming email originating from this IP address.

p/s: Apart from asking your respective IT department to release your IP, you can try to change your IP (as long as the IP is within the celcom IP range) to the one which is not blocked.

          RE:ERROR 619

          2
Since a lot of visitors are inquiring about error 619, I thought that my previous post may not giving you a comprehensive understanding with regard to ERROR 619. Indeed most of the hits to this blog are from those who are searching solutions to this error. So here we go again (please note that this troubleshoot is done using Celcom Mobile Broadband):

          what does error 619 mean?
This error indicate that the connection to certain network is timed out usually due to
          1. Network Congestion/Poor Signal Strength
          2. Port error

          Root Problem:
          1. For network congestion and poor signal strength, in the case of Celcom Mobile Broadband, it may means the 3G or WCDMA network which you are trying to connect may be congested or probably due to your location which is too far or beyond the range of the Celcom WCDMA transmitter tower.

          2. For port error you can refer to my previous post: http://amrymr.blogspot.com/2009/03/error-619-connection-to-remote-computer.html

          Solutions:
          1. Please make sure your device detect Celcom WCDMA network and at least there are 3 bars of signal strength are available. Below than that may cause your connection being frequently disconnected or worst, no connection at all.

2.If the error occured when your device attached to WCDMA network, the best bet is change your device network setting to GPRS only. A thing to note here is that whenever you want to choose connection type please make sure you use GPRS only or 3G/WCDMA only. Do not use GPRS preffered or 3G/WCDMA preffered because it may effect your signal and connection stability.

          3. Sometimes your computer confuse itself by mistakenly arrange devices within a same port. This may happen when you unplug your modem improperly. Rebooting your computer will repair the mis-managed port.

4.Sometimes your modem will not work (due to file or installation corruption) on the pre-installed software such as mobile connect lite or mobile partner. In a rare but possible situation, the dialing software got bugs. Try to download the latest version of your dialing software from the internet such as www.business.vodafone.com (for hua wei and vodafone brand only).

5.If the connection is still failed, you need to do a manual connection. In brief, I try to explain it here:

From start menu go to Control Panel>Phone and Modem Options>Modem. Please make sure your modem is listed here and it is attached to a valid COM port. Highlight your modem and click properties> Diagnostic> Query Modem. Please wait untill the query modem instructions complete successfully. Once success, then click advance and look for extra initialization command box and key in +cgdcont=1,"ip","celcom3g" . Then press OK twice to exit the Phone and Modem Options section.

Under control panel choose Network connection and follow these steps:
          Create a new connection.

          a. Click Next

          b. Select “Connect To The Internet” then Next

          c. Select “Set up my connection manually” then Next

          d. Select “Connect using a dial-up modem” then Next.

          e. Check only the USB Modem (or whatever your modem brand is-if prompted).

          f. Give the connection a name such as “Celcom Internet”, then Next.

          g. On the next screen, key in the dial up number: *99#

          h. Click Next.

          i. On the next screen, key in username and password:
          Username: blank
          Password: blank

          j. Clear all checkboxes (”Use…when anyone…” and “Make this the default…”)

          k. Click Finish and clik on dial/connect

Last night I was surprised to see that I was hooked to a new IP. I said its new because previously I never hooked to this IP. So I am glad to know that actually Celcom do provides more than 2 IPs for the Peninsular Malaysia subscribers. The new IP is 203.82.91.101 [previously I was hooked to 203.82.79.2 and 203.82.91.34] Please refer to the attachment below:

SERVICE UNAVAILABLE ERROR AND INFO ON A MOBILE BROADBAND SYSTEM

          2
Since the early of this week, there were several complaints with regards to the Prepaid Broadband offered by Celcom. This package operate using WCDMA network spectrum which offers speed of up to maximum 384Kbps only. The most common problem, is that whenever subscriber want to do the connection, error message pop up saying that service is unavailable.

          Root Problem:
Most of the case is due to the problem with the GSN (GPRS Support Node) system. Whenever subscriber want to initiate Internet sessions, a PDP (Packet Data Protocol) will be created and processed by the SGSN. In this case, to establish a connection to the world wide web, a valid link must be available on HLR (Home Location Register). If the link status was invalid or incorrect, then you will have this service unavailable error.

          Solutions:
The root problem above may happen if the WCDMA network is down. Restarting your computer or device may solve this temporary problem. You also may try to revert your connection to GPRS/EDGE only since its a totally different network. If this not solving your problem, its time to contact their contact centre. Log a report and wait until their technician team ratify the problem, usualy gonna take arround 3 working days.

Brief information on a mobile broadband system:
          1) Subscriber who want to access internet (let say subscriber are using Vodafone E165G USB Modem), whenever the subscriber click "connect" button on the Mobile Partner application software, the computer will instruct the Modem to create or initiate a PDP (Packet Data Protocol) session and send it to the GSN (GPRS Support Node) System. The PDP session exploit the GSM network to reach the GSN system.

          2) The GSN system encorporate 2 data nodes which process the incoming PDP session (called the SGSN [Serving GPRS Support Node] ) system and second one is the system which process and determine the connection to the internet (called the GGSN [Gateway GPRS Support Node] ).

          3) So when you face an error like "sevice unavailable", "a connection to the remote computer cannot be established"-eventhough these error may be the result of your mulfunctioning/conflicting software and hardware, however most of the time these error may be attributed to the failure of the PDP session to be sent correctly to the SGSN system.

          4) If you face an error like "Limited Connectivity" where the connection status is connected but in fact its not there at all, then the fault most probably lies on the the GGSN system. "Limited connectivity" error usually happen when your IP was not assigned correctly by your ISP provider. The GGSN determine what IP should be assigend to your computer so that your computer can communicate with the entire Internet network. If the GGSN failed to do so, automatically your computer will auto generate a dummy IP. What is the function of this dummy IP? Well, nothing to be precise. The IP only recognized by the host computer but annonymous in the eyes of the other computers on the network.

          5) What is proxy and what is IP address?
Definitely they are two different "things". Usually proxy address is used within an internal network while IP address is used between network. However basicly they are both used as identification or as a communication method between a devices/clients or servers.

          STATIC IP VS DYNAMIC IP

          1
As noted on the previous post, Celcom Mobile Broadband are using Public Dynamic IP (which means that there is no specific IP address assigned to your connection and in most cases it may means that you are sharing a same IP with other subscriber). Most blogs out there mistakenly states that Celcom use static IP, however the truth is Celcom are using Public Dynamic IP where several IP are shared by Celcom subscribers. Static IP means each subcribers got their own IP which in this celcom broadband scenario is not the case (since subscriber are sharing the IP and not using distinctive personal IP per subscriber)

Static IP and Dynamic IP as defined by wikipedia:
"When a computer is configured to use the same IP address each time it powers up, this is known as a Static IP address. In contrast, in situations when the computer's IP address is assigned automatically, it is known as a Dynamic IP address."

Example of Celcom broadband IP in Peninsular Malaysia: 203.82.79.2 and 203.82.91.34 (Most probable IP range are between 203.82.64.0 - 203.82.95.255)

Based on my own experience, most of the time I was hooked to the 203.82.91.34 and according to unconfirmed source the 203.82.79.2 is the most unreliable IP (read, slow and lot of problems)

This IP is not static. It differs based on locations and other circumstances. Your IP may be changed (but its not that frequent) if there is a congestion or overload on the previous IP you are using, in certain conditions the system may reroute your connection to a new available and uncongested IP.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN STATIC IP AND DYNAMIC IP

          1. Eventhough Dynamic IP is considered as Unsecured connection, however in theory Static IP is more prone to hackers due to the fact that the IP address is permanent. Once a hacker got your IP number, its easy for them to access your data remotely. In contrast, for dynamic IP since it is not permanent address, your IP address may change from time to time, thus making hacker`s job more difficult.

2.Each time a dynamic IP address refreshes you run the risk of downtime from the server. While this is usually only for a very short time, it can wreak havoc on your FTP activity/gaming. Having a static address eliminates this risk.

3.For all those online gaming addicts, having a static IP address means that you can take your gaming to the next level. Most PC games have an option for operating your own server, allowing you to select your own settings and regulate who you let into your game - so you and your friends could have a private game of Battlefield.

4.FTP (File Transfer Protocol) may encounter several connection error/slow connection if ran on a Dynamic IP (eventhough FTP activity with a dynamic IP is still possible). This may happen due to a lot of other internet surfer connect to the internet using the same IP thus restricting the bandwidth resources.

5.The most noteable disadvantage of a dynamic IP over a Static IP is that, let say there are 4 internet surfers surf the internet using the same IP, if one of them banned from a certain website, it will also effect the other 3 surfers. In the case of Celcom Mobile Broadband, the most common problem is when they try to access File sharing website such as Rapidshare and Megaupload (where free download are restricted per IP) and IRC chat server (which require personal IP for security and management purpose).

          6. For dynamic IP, in case of overload and internet surfing is almost impossible or too slow, releasing and reregistering IP may solve the problem. However for static IP, there is nothing you can do since your IP is permanent and cannot be changed.

BLACKBERRY PHONE AS MODEM FOR CELCOM BIS SUBSCRIBERS

          8
This is a general outline using your phone as a modem for Celcom BIS subscribers. Please note that these steps are applicable generally for all Blackberry smartphone, connected to a Windows based PC/Laptop using USB cable.

          Connect Your BlackBerry
Make sure your BlackBerry is connected by USB cable, and your BlackBerry Handheld Manager is running (just launch BlackBerry Desktop to run it.) This is necessary for using the BlackBerry as an external modem. You cannot use BlackBerry as a modem unless you have BlackBerry Handheld Manager running in the background

          Modem Driver Install
If you installed a recent version of BlackBerry Desktop that came with a 7100t, 7290, 7250, or 7520, it should include modem drivers and already be automatically installed. In the event you need to manually install them, the modem drivers should be located in this directory:
          C:\program files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Modem Drivers
However, if you are having problems with these drivers, uninstall, delete all leftover RIM files, and then reinstall the latest version of BlackBerry Desktop.

          Verify The Modem Driver Exists
Go to Control Panel -> Phone & Modem Options. In the Modems tab, you should see a new “Standard Modem” on a new port (such as COM6 or COM11). If you do, jump to the next step.

However, if your modem is missing:
If this modem entry is missing and cannot be found using Plug n Play, you may have to manually add it. Verify you have “RIM Virtual Serial Port” drivers installed. Find out which COM ports the RIM Virtual Serial Ports are, go to Control Panel -> System -> Hardware -> Device Manager -> Ports (COM & LPT) … This will tell you which COM ports your BlackBerry Modem is on. Next, go to Control Panel -> Phone and Modem and Remove the modem. Re-add the modem by clicking on Add. You MUST select the “Standard 33600 bps Modem” (correct) INSTEAD OF “Standard 56000 bps Modem” (wrong). Click Next. You will be asked for the ports to add this modem to. Add this modem to all COM ports that the RIM Virtual Serial Port is on. You must choose the “Standard 33600 bps Modem” because of incompatible AT commands that result in an Error 628. Don’t worry, the speed won’t be slower.

Verify The Modem Driver Is Functioning
Go to Control Panel -> Phone & Modem Options. In the Modems tab, you should see a new Standard Modem on a new port (such as COM6 or COM11). Click Properties -> Diagnostics -> Query Modem. You should see the following:
          Quote:
          ATQ0V1E0 - OK
          AT+GMM - BlackBerry IPmodem
          AT+FCLASS=? - OK
          AT#CLS=? - OK
          AT+GCI? - OK
          AT+GCI=? - OK

          IMPORTANT SPECIAL CONFIGURATION STEP
Click Properties -> Advanced and add only ONE of the following Extra initialization commands with the appropriate carrier-specific APN Setting:
          +cgdcont=1,"ip","celcom3g"

          Add A New Internet Connection
Close the Phone and Modem Options and the Control Panel. Create a new connection with Start -> Connect To -> Show all connections -> Create a new connection.

          1. Click Next

          2. Select “Connect To The Internet” then Next

          3. Select “Set up my connection manually” then Next

          4. Select “Connect using a dial-up modem” then Next.

          5. Check only the Standard Modem (if prompted).

          6. Give the connection a name such as “BlackBerry Modem”, then Next.

          7. On the next screen, key in the dial up number: *99# or *99***1#

          8. Click Next.

          9. On the next screen, key in username and password:
          Username: blank
          Password: blank

          10. Clear all checkboxes (”Use…when anyone…” and “Make this the default…”)

          11. Click Finish

          Disable IP Header Compression
Make sure TCP/IP Properties (Advanced) “Use IP Header Compression” checkbox is NOT checked. To verify this, do these steps:

          1. Start Menu->Network Connections->”BlackBerry Modem”
          2. Click Properties Button
          3. Click Networking Tab
          4. Select “Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)”
          5. Click Properties Button
          6. Click Advanced… Button
          7. Disable “Use IP header compression” checkbox
          8. Click all OK buttons to close all dialogs
Also make sure you clear all these checkboxes, if you see any of these checked:
Turn off “Enable Hardware Flow Control”
Turn off “Enable Modem Error Control”
          Turn off “Enable Modem Compression”

          What is PPP? A definition by Wikipedia;

"In networking, the Point-to-Point Protocol, or PPP, is a data link protocol commonly used to establish a direct connection between twonetworking nodes. It can provide connection authentication and can also provide transmission encryption privacy and compression.

PPP is used over many types of physical networks including serial cablephone linetrunk linecellular telephone, specialized radio links, or fiber optic links such as SONET. Most Internet service providers (ISPs) use PPP for customer dial-up access to the Internet. Two encapsulated forms of PPP, Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet (PPPoE) and Point-to-Point Protocol over ATM (PPPoA), are used by Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to connect Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) Internet service.

PPP is commonly used to act as a data link layer protocol for connection over synchronous and asynchronous circuits, where it has largely superseded the older, non-standard Serial Line Internet Protocol (SLIP), and telephone company mandated standards (such as Link Access Protocol, Balanced (LAPB) in the X.25 protocol suite). PPP was designed to work with numerous network layer protocols, including Internet Protocol (IP), Novell's Internetwork Packet Exchange (IPX), NBF and AppleTalk."
